‘WE THE RESILIENT’ BOOK FEATURES TIMELY WISDOM

FROM WOMEN AGES 96 TO 104

LOS ANGELES, April 13, 2017 – At a time when the majority of Americans express disapproval of the nation’s leadership and direction, a new book delivers helpful and timely advice from an unexpected source: women between 96 and 104 years old.

We the Resilient: Wisdom for America from Women Born Before Suffrage features reflections from 78 women from across the country, all born before the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote in 1920.

The book stemmed from the website IWaited96Years.com, which made international headlines in the weeks before the election for featuring stories of women born before women could vote who were casting ballots for Hillary Clinton. The site was covered by scores of media outlets, including BuzzFeed, NPR, The Washington Post, People, and NBC News.

“After the disappointment of the election, friends suggested we ask these very wise women how the nation could move forward,” said Sarah Bunin Benor, a Los Angeles professor who edited the book with Tom Fields-Meyer, an author and journalist.

The women’s narratives describe how the United States has survived challenges from the Great Depression to World War II and the McCarthy Era. The women also describe how they have overcome personal challenges and faced sexism. And they offer advice about how the country can face the future.

Some women recall selling candy bars or homemade rugs during the Depression. Others recount working in factories during World War II while their boyfriends or husbands were at war. Many express concern about the current administration. “I would love to push my walker into mass protests,” says one 103-year-old.

With a foreword by former Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), the book features contemporary and vintage photographs of the women, who come from 26 states.

“These women have experienced so much,” said Fields-Meyer. “We were repeatedly inspired by their resilience and their remarkable stories.”

We the Resilient will be available April 24 on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and other booksellers. For more information, see WeTheResilientBook.com.
